The Two Friends and the Bear
In a prosperous township nestled in the Himalayan foothills lived two young traders, Rohan and Sohan. Lifelong companions from early childhood, their bond was regarded across the district as an unbreakable brotherhood. They shared their fortunes and pledged mutual fidelity in all pursuits. Resolved to expand their trade, they planned a mercantile expedition to a remote mountain cantonment. The sole overland route wound through an ancient, primeval forest known to harbor rogue predators. Before crossing the forest perimeter, Sohan clasped his friend's hand: 'Brother, these ravines are perilous. Let us vow that whatever danger confronts us, we shall fight shoulder-to-shoulder and never forsake one another.' Rohan touched his breast and affirmed the sacred vow with solemn fervor.
Bearing packs of rich textiles upon their shoulders, the companions advanced along the moss-covered paths. Towering deodars and sal trees formed an impenetrable canopy, filtering the midday sun into a dim, amber gloom. For hours they marched amidst the rustle of dry leaves and the distant calls of mountain birds. As they navigated a narrow defile in the wildest heart of the wilderness, a sudden shudder rippled through the bracken. Snapping branches heralded an immense presence, and a deep, guttural growl echoed off the canyon walls, freezing the blood in their veins.
Crashing through the dense undergrowth emerged a colossal Himalayan black bear, scarred from territorial battles. Its razor-sharp claws scraped the stone, and its predatory eyes flared with savage fury. Rearing upon its hind legs, the beast let loose a deafening roar and charged. Confronted by visceral terror, every high-minded principle and solemn oath evaporated instantly from Rohan’s heart. Driven by naked self-preservation, the agile youth bolted toward a massive oak, leaped onto the lowest bough, and scrambled into the high branches, never once casting a backward glance or extending a helping hand to his earthbound comrade.
Sohan was left stranded upon the open forest floor, utterly lacking the physical skill to scale the smooth, mossy trunk. He glanced up, hoping for assistance, but saw only Rohan cowering deep within the foliage, pulling up his legs in absolute silence. Facing death with mere seconds to spare, Sohan mastered the surging panic in his chest. A memory surfaced from his elder's lore: bears possess an innate disdain for dead carrion, seeking only living prey. Without a heartbeat's hesitation, Sohan cast himself face-down into the cold moss, sealed his lips, clamped his eyelids shut, and suspended his respiration, freezing his body into absolute rigor mortis.
The massive beast lumbered to the spot, its heavy paws thudding upon the loam. It prodded Sohan's shoulder with its snout and nudged his ribs. Lowering its wet, steaming muzzle, the bear sniffed meticulously around Sohan’s ears, his temples, and the carotid pulse along his throat. Sohan’s heart hammered against his ribs like a caged falcon, yet with monumental willpower, he did not allow a solitary flicker of breath or a micro-twitch of muscle to betray life. Detecting no warmth of breathing and no sign of life, the beast snorted disdainfully, turned its massive shoulders, and lumbered away into the safety of the ravine.
Only when the predator’s footsteps had long dissolved did Rohan cautiously descend the trunk. Dusting his tunic and assuming a nonchalant swagger, he slapped Sohan’s shoulder with feigned mirth: 'What miraculous luck, my dear Sohan! From the branches, I saw the beast press its snout against your ear like a confessor. Tell me truly, what arcane secret was the bear whispering into your ear?' Sohan arose, brushed the loam from his robes, gathered his wares, and looked Rohan dead in the eyes with unshakable dignity: 'The bear bestowed upon me a priceless truth. It counseled me never to walk a single mile in the company of a hypocrite who recites vows in prosperity, yet abandons his brother to the jaws of death at the first sign of peril.' Turning his back, Sohan strode down the mountain pass alone. The timeless parable endures: adversity is the ultimate crucible that separates pure gold from hollow brass in human relationships.
