The Umbrella with the Blue Handle
नीले हत्थे वाली छतरी
रितु जब अपनी पड़ोसी श्रीमती फ़र्नांडिस के घर से निकल रही थी, तभी बारिश शुरू हो गई। श्रीमती फ़र्नांडिस ने उसे नीले हत्थे वाली मज़बूत छतरी उधार दी और कहा कि अगले दिन लौटा देना। रितु ने धन्यवाद दिया और उसकी देखभाल करने का वादा किया।
Rain began just as Ritu was leaving her neighbour Mrs. Fernandes’s home. Mrs. Fernandes lent her a sturdy umbrella with a blue handle and said she could return it the next day. Ritu was grateful and promised to take care of it.
घर लौटते समय बस में उसने एक बुज़ुर्ग यात्री के लिए जगह बनाने हेतु सीट बदली। वह जल्दी में उतर गई और छतरी बस में ही छूट गई। घर पहुँचकर बैग देखने पर उसे गलती समझ आई। वह शर्मिंदा हुई और सोचने लगी कि कुछ न बताए; शायद पड़ोसी छतरी के बारे में भूल जाएँ।
On the bus ride home, Ritu changed seats to make room for an older passenger. She got off in a hurry and left the umbrella behind. At home, she searched her bag and realised what had happened. She felt embarrassed and considered saying nothing, hoping the umbrella would be forgotten.
लेकिन रितु श्रीमती फ़र्नांडिस के पास गई और सच बता दिया। पड़ोसी निराश थीं, क्योंकि वे हर दिन छतरी का इस्तेमाल करती थीं, फिर भी उन्होंने सच बताने के लिए रितु की सराहना की। रितु के माता-पिता की मदद से उन्होंने बस डिपो से संपर्क किया और छतरी का सही विवरण दिया। अगले दिन दोपहर तक छतरी नहीं मिली। रितु ने अपनी बचत का कुछ हिस्सा लगाया और तय बजट में नई छतरी चुनने में मदद की।
Instead, Ritu went to Mrs. Fernandes and explained honestly. Her neighbour was disappointed, because she used the umbrella every day, but appreciated being told the truth. With Ritu’s parent helping, they contacted the bus depot and shared a clear description. The umbrella was not found by the next afternoon. Ritu used part of her savings and helped choose a replacement within an agreed budget.
श्रीमती फ़र्नांडिस ने ज़िम्मेदारी स्वीकार करने के लिए उसे धन्यवाद दिया। रितु ने सीखा कि ज़िम्मेदार होने का अर्थ कभी गलती न करना नहीं है। इसका अर्थ सच बताना, नुकसान सुधारने का उचित प्रयास करना और बस से उतरने से पहले सीट तथा सामान जाँचने जैसी आदत बदलना है।
Mrs. Fernandes thanked her for accepting responsibility. Ritu learned that being responsible does not mean never making mistakes. It means telling the truth, making a reasonable effort to repair the loss, and changing habits—such as checking the seat and belongings before leaving a bus.
