The Promise to Tomorrow
Rohan\'s grandfather — Ramaprasad Ji — lived alone in the old part of the city. He was past seventy, but his eyes and voice still held a remarkable warmth and clarity. Whenever Rohan visited, his grandfather would tell stories — a childhood spent by rivers, tales from India\'s freedom movement, and lessons he had distilled from decades of living. Rohan treasured those moments. Last summer, when Rohan had not visited for several weeks due to studies, his grandfather had said, 'Come by every Sunday, child — even for just one hour.' Rohan had promised cheerfully, 'Of course, Dada Ji!'
But making a promise and keeping it are two very different things. The first Sunday there was a cricket tournament. The second Sunday had an unfinished school project. The third Sunday was a friend\'s birthday. The fourth Sunday it rained. Each time, Rohan called his grandfather with an apology: 'I will definitely come next week, Dada Ji.' And each time his grandfather said, 'That is fine, child. Take care of yourself.' His voice carried no complaint — but there was always a faint, gentle sadness in it that Rohan would notice and then forget.
Six weeks later, his mother called. 'Rohan, Dada Ji has a fever and has been admitted to hospital.' Rohan\'s heart sank. He reached the hospital immediately. His grandfather lay in the bed, eyes closed. When Rohan took his hand, his grandfather opened his eyes and smiled — 'You came, child.' Just those two words. In that smile there was no blame, no grievance — but what those two words contained cut straight through Rohan. He counted silently: six Sundays had passed. Six chances he had deferred with the word 'later.'
The doctor said his grandfather would recover within a few days — but this was a warning. Age gradually weakens the body. Rohan sat beside his grandfather for three hours that afternoon. His grandfather told him a story he had never heard before — about the tree in their ancestral village whose shade gathered the entire neighbourhood. Rohan thought: I could have heard this story six Sundays ago. 'Dada Ji, please forgive me,' he said quietly. 'I broke my promise.' His grandfather patted his hand: 'Child, you did not break it — you simply forgot. And you are here now — that is enough.'
On the way home, Rohan set a reminder in his phone: 'Sunday, 10 am — Dada Ji.' He also understood something he had not before: promises to spend time with people must be treated as seriously as homework or study — because people can understand when schedules genuinely change, but being repeatedly postponed carries a pain that runs very deep. He decided: the very next Sunday would begin with Dada Ji, before anything else.
The following Sunday, Rohan arrived at his grandfather\'s house at ten in the morning. They drank tea together, looked through old photographs, and walked slowly through the small garden. The brightness in his grandfather\'s eyes was something Rohan had never seen so clearly before. That evening he wrote in his diary: 'Promises made to those who love us must be kept first. Because they will never ask — and their time with us will not always be there.' That was the lesson: \'later\' is the most costly word in the language when it is attached to someone we love.
